Users of the Starbucks mobile app will soon have the opportunity to pay with the Bakkt Cash app. In August 2018, Bakkt‘s parent company Intercontinental Exchange Inc (ICE), announced they were working to enable an app to be used to pay with crypto in retail stores. Yesterday, Bakkt finally declared that users of the Bakkt Cash app will soon be able to use it to pay with crypto at Starbucks.
The functionality will eventually become available to all users, but at the moment anyone wishing to pay with crypto must register in the platform’s ‘Early Access Program.’ Adam White President at Bakkt, mentioned on twitter yesterday, “As global markets shed trillions of dollars, empowering consumers with new spending power is more important than ever. We’re also reducing payment costs for merchants which improves their bottom line. Open your Starbucks app to see our first direct integration and select Bakkt to sign up for the Early Access Program.”
In a statement, Starbucks confirmed it remains a “strategic launch partner” for Bakkt. A spokesperson for Starbucks commented, “We anticipate that a range of cryptocurrencies will gain traction with customers and, through our work with Bakkt, we will be uniquely positioned to constantly consider and offer customers new and unique ways to pay seamlessly, at Starbucks.”
